QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my existing Obsidian Vault as it is?

Yes. You can open Markdown files and attachments without converting them to a proprietary format. Obsidian plugins, themes, Canvas, and Bases are not supported.

Where are my notes stored?

Your notes are stored on your device as ordinary Markdown files. Voel does not store your note contents on its servers.

Can I sync with my computer and other devices?

Yes. Voel includes Syncthing for peer-to-peer sync across your devices.

Files don’t sync when Voel is closed on my iPhone

Apple’s iOS does not allow third-party apps to run continuously in the background. Syncing may therefore pause or be delayed while Voel is closed. To ensure your files are up to date, open Voel and wait for syncing to finish.

What is Syncthing?

Syncthing is open-source software that uses peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to synchronize files across your devices. Instead of storing files in a specific cloud storage service, it syncs them directly between your devices. Voel uses Syncthing to sync Markdown files and attachments.

Do I need to install Syncthing separately?

Not on your phone or tablet—Syncthing is built into Voel. On your computer, Voel works with the Syncthing setup you already use.

What happens to my notes if I stop using Voel?

Your Markdown files and attachments remain yours. You can continue opening them with other Markdown editors.

Are my notes sent to AI or external services?

Voel does not automatically send note contents, search terms, tags, or file paths to external AI services. If you use your Markdown with another AI tool, check that tool’s data policy separately.

Is Voel an official Obsidian app?

No. Voel is an independent app and is not affiliated with Obsidian. It is designed to work with Markdown Vaults used by Obsidian.

Which devices will Voel support?

Voel is coming to iOS and Android, with layouts designed for both phones and tablets.
